Understanding 504
A 504 Plan is a legal document created under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. It ensures that students with disabilities have equal access to education by providing the accommodation and support they need to participate fully in school. Unlike an Individualized Education Program (IEP) a 504 plan does not include specialized instruction but instead focuses on removing barriers to learning. Common accommodations may include extended testing time, preferential seating or access to assistive technology.
