There are more than 600,000 people who are be released from state and federal prisons each year. Their Journey will be explored in this blog.
Reentry describes the process one goes through upon release from incarceration. The criminal justice system heavily impacts those who become entangled in its web. The consequences for those who spend time in jai can be the loss of a job or apartment. The consequences for those who have spent time in prison can be varied and formidable. Two thirds of prisoners return to prison within three years from release. The process of returning to prison is called recidivism.
Although prisons are “correctional facilities” the vast majority of prisons do little to correct, transform or empower the people whose time they have in the palm of their hand. Upon release a formerly incarcerated person is provided little to assist them in their Reentry journey and empower them not to return. Therefore the Reentry journey of newly released citizens is in large part left to them to orchestrated. These persons need support from the immediate network of family and friends, their community and their government. Each individual has unique needs and challenges. It is crucial to address the holistic personal needs including, but not limited to: cognitive and behavioral change, spiritual, mental and emotional health, housing, employment, eliminating substance use and family support.
